Strategic Horizon Briefing Series

Members-Only | Virtual via Zoom | Wednesday, January 14 2026 | 12pm ET

We are pleased to launch the Strategic Horizon Briefing Series, a quarterly experts' briefing designed to give CIC members timely, authoritative insight into fast-moving global developments. Each edition offers focused analysis followed by a live Q&A hosted by CIC Executive Director Melanie Walker and featuring leading subject-matter experts.

This Quarter’s Focus

The U.S. Security Reset - Strategy, Power & Canada’s Position

In December 2025, the United States released its new National Security Strategy (NSS), shifting its security doctrine toward economic power, industrial capacity, and sovereignty. This marks a major departure from previous U.S. approaches centred on multilateralism and alliance-building.

Recent actions further underscore this shift:

  • Greenland: renewed U.S. statements signalling strategic interest and “all options” on the table

  • Venezuela: a U.S. operation resulting in the removal of Nicolás Maduro, raising questions about hemispheric posture and intervention norms

This expert’s briefing will unpack what these developments mean for Canada’s foreign, defence, and economic security outlook.
